Garfield Heights has put into effect a contract with RedFlex to begin installing 6 Fixed Intersection Red Light/Speed Cameras and will also use up to 2 mobile Red Light/Speed Cameras.

At Monday May 10ths Council meeting Garfield Heights Mayor Vic Collova announced the Mobile traffic cameras will be on the road and issueing tickets.

These cameras are being installed through-out the country by municipalities that are desiring to bolster bad fiscal policies with another source of income, The State of Ohio has rulled these cameras are ONLY to be used for safety purposes and many have used safety as the reason they say publicly for the municipality's camera installation efforts.

Garfield Heights now ex-mayor Thomas Longo prior to introducing legislation for the cameras spoke with a reporter and was quoted as saying:
"You really don't want to say we did it for finances, but really we are," (read Plain Dealer article)

GARFIELD HTS. -- Mayor Thomas Longo used a threat to lay off 19 workers to prompt City Council on Monday to pursue traffic cameras.
Longo's maneuver caused Police Chief Thomas Murphy to complain the Police Department was being used as "pawns" in a "stand-off" among Longo and council members.

If you are unsure how you feel about Red Light Cameras - Let's examine the facts:

SAFETY ISSUES:

  • UNDER Current OHIO Law the Violator would be fined $ 100.00 and Court costs of about $105.00.
  • They could receive 2 points on their Drivers license.
  • Multiple offenders would have the financial disincentive AND would face potentially losing driving privelages in OHIO due to the points accumulation.
  • Garfield Heights and others that make it a CIVIL Fine…
  • Offender Pays Fine----Mailed in.
  • receives NO POINTS AND NO DANGER OF LOSING DRIVING PRIVELAGES IN OHIO.
  • Multiple offenders pay only fines and mail them in again and again as they speed and run red lights.

WHICH ONE SEEMS TO PROMOTE SAFETY FOR THE PUBLIC BETTER?
